The game takes place several years after the events of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Max, now in his mid-40s, has retired from his life as a hitman and moved to Brazil, where he hopes to start anew. However, his quiet life is short-lived, as he's soon drawn back into the world of violence and corruption.
