As I woke up early on a sunny Saturday morning, I couldn't help but feel a thrill of excitement. Today was the day I had been looking forward to for weeks – a day with Dad and Uncle Tom. My mom had told me that they had planned a special adventure just for me, and I couldn't wait to see what it was.

The radio was playing classic rock, which usually I think is boring, but today it felt different. Dad drummed on the steering wheel. Uncle Tom sang the wrong lyrics on purpose. I leaned my head back and watched the trees turn from suburbs to farms to forest.

A Day with Dad and Uncle Tom By: Sheila Robins, age 11

The afternoon flew by, and before we knew it, the sun was starting to set. As we rode our bikes back home, I turned to Dad and Uncle Tom and said, "This has been the best day ever! Thank you for taking me on this adventure." They both smiled, and Dad ruffled my hair.

The sun hadn’t even fully cleared the horizon when the floorboards creaked. I’m Sheila Robins, I’m eleven, and I know that sound anywhere. It meant Dad and Uncle Tom were already in the kitchen, which usually meant one of two things: we were going fishing, or they were about to try to fix something they definitely should have called a professional for.

This dynamic teaches young readers an important lesson about family roles: different people serve different purposes in our lives, and comparison is often an unfair metric for love.
